Located 30 km south west of Seoul. The basic function of Banweol New Town was the relocation of undesirable polluting industries rather than people from Seoul. The entire planning area covers almost 41 square km of which 37 per cent was planned for residential residential use, 19 per cent for industrial use and 4 per cent for commercial and business functions. The remaining 40 per cent was used for green open spaces to segregate residential areas from the industrial areas. A number of modern planning ideas were implemented in the planning of Banweol: segregation of traffic from internal traffic and pedestrianised streets amd bike lanes. The decentralization effect of Banweol has not been very succesfull. The town is within commuting distance of Seoul and therefore many employees travel back and forth from Seoul to their jobs, rather than live in the new town , as originally envisaged. It was developed by the Industrial Estate Development Corporation.
