Camaguey was founded in as Santa Maria del Puerto del Principe 1514 and it is one of the seven towns that Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar (conquerer and governer of Cuba for Spain) founded on Cuba. The town was moved land inwards in 1528 because of pirate attacks. The new town was planned as a labyrinth of narrow streets. The idea behind this choice was that the inhabitants could trap pirates in the many dead-end streets. The city was also planned with one entry and exit point, to make it easier to defend.
