Havana was founded in 1515 and it is one of the seven towns that Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar (conquerer and governer of Cuba for Spain) founded on Cuba. The town was first founded elsewhere and in 1519 it was relocated to its present location. Havana is projected in a bay that is connected with the Caribbean Sea and was originally a port town. In 1607 Havana became the capital of the Spanish colony of Cuba. The city still is the governmental centre of the country and its largest city.

The planners of Havana didn't follow the principles of Spanish colonial town planning. However there is a central square where the most important institutions are housed. On top of that a gridiron can be discovered in the street pattern, although it isn't as strict as the grid of Santiago de Cuba.
