The new capital city is located 40 km west of Harare, in the rural homeland of President Robert Mugabe. The project is already in progress, starting from the construction of the new Parliament House. The State House, Reserve Bank, the Supreme and High Courts and other administrative building are expected to follow, along with a residential area, shopping centers and tourist facilities.
However the ambitious project for the New Capital of Zimbabwe has to face oppositions from both local economists and politicians. Actually it has been defined unnecessary and unjustifiable and the government of Zimbabwe has been blamed for what is considered a misplacement of priorities.
The main complaint concerns the impossibility of the government to finance such an over ambitious project. Moreover funds and investments should be addressed to existing urban settlement, already in the need of development.
