Park Forest, Illinois, situated 40 mi. from Chicago, was planned ten years after the Greenbelt towns with the same ideas. Park Forest was one of the first planned communities with a 'regional shopping center' functioning as a hub for the community. Another novelty was the development of rental houses.

In 1968 the HUD approved Park Forest South as a Title IV New Community.
