Havirov lies in the north east of the Czech Republic close to the Polish border. In the beginning of the 1950s the New Town was built with a socialist realist urban planning and architecture to accommodate workers in the coal mines surrounding the town. Most workers were migrants from other parts of -then- Czechoslowakia, making the demographical make-up of the city quite different from that of the rural villages which previously occupied the region.
