Paula Miyahara, Romeu Vidali Neto and Tadeáš Rozboril study the one-year degree program “urban dynamics” at CAH Vilentum University of Applied Sciences in Almere. They take part in the New New Towns program by studying waste management, food production and water management of Guangming New Town as interns at the Shenzhen Center for Design.

Solid Green Waste Management
Guangming New Town wants to become a Low-Carbon City with special attention for environmental protection, energy conservation and ecology. This vision is embodied in newly established parks as well as tree lines along the roads and the preservation of nature inside the city. What is unclear until now is how waste will be processed in Guangming New Town. How can green matter, coming from plants inside the city, be used for producing energy or further processing? What are recent trends in waste management? How can local knowledge contribute to innovative solutions in Guangming New Town?

Understanding Guangming New Town and its water management
Guangming New Town has plans to be developed into the new industrial techno pole in the area. The expected changes in the district will demand urban renewal and adequacy of the water management. The research intends to understand the relation between these issues: what can be done about the existing problems in the water management of Guangming New Town in order to achieve a more sustainable urban development? Who are the stakeholders and how should they deal with issues such as pollution, soil degradation and inefficient drainage?

Main Food Products Consumed in Guangming New Town
This research is investigating the current food production in regard to the future growth of Guangming New Town. It looks at the main products consumed by an average household in the district, and attempts to find out the production practices, sites, routes and chains of these products. The outcome of the research can be used for future urban development of the district to enhance logistics and supply plans. It should enable the city to be more efficient and to guarantee the food supply even within its own boundaries. Questionnaires were compiled and translated into Chinese in order to conduct a survey through the help of the students of the Shenzhen University in five different communities in Guangming New Town to find the main products.
