Located 42 km north of Göteborg, Stenungsund is situated in Bohuslän and functions as the seat of the Municipality of Stenungsund in Västra Götaland County. The town itself houses 10,067 (2005) residents while the municipality makes a total number of 23,000 citizens. Beautifully located at the west coast, the area was historically a popular bathing location for Swedes on vacation. From the 1950s, however, a new town began to develop around the growing petrol chemistry industry, dominating the site. Thus, the transformation from calm summer residence to one of Swedens principal hubs for the petrol chemistry has four-doubled the population in about 50 years. According to the website of Stenungsund, the town is a 'tightly knit community' where most people live out the dream of the new town with short distances on foot or bike to the centre. Together with the Tjörn Bridge (1960) to the island of Tjörn, the four monolithic chimneys of the major power plant make up a landmark. In total, Stenungsund covers an area of 11,44 km2 with a density of 904/km2.
