Regeneration through Integration

A unique and integrative masterplan in Shenzhen creates a creative gateway to and from Hongkong and regenerates the urban landscape of the city.

Shenzhen is a Chinese New Town that was established in 1980 through the declaration of the location as a Special Economic Zone by the government. Now a city of almost fifteen million, Shenzhen’s is already rethinking its economic and urban future– shifting from an industrial city with a manufacturing industry to a creative city, which thrives on the service- and knowledge-industry. Hence, warehouses and storage facilities in the urban landscape no longer fulfil contemporary needs and regeneration processes are on the agenda. Instead of grand projects, the city choses for a design that introduces a series of measures and projects to be integrated in the existing fabric. With respect for the partly unused built environment, significant road and rail infrastructure, large open spaces and the topography of the site, the framework continues the urban history of Shenzhen as the result of pragmatism succeeding over monumentality.

  • Unique Masterplan approach which addresses the relationship between the social, economic and physical elements while shaping the urban environments.
  • Integrate existing qualities through a development framework which sets guidelines and principles
