With the aim of relieving the pressures of urban expansion and growing needs of its population on the historic Hanoi, Hanoi New Town is planned with a close proximity to the existing city. The site area allocated to the new city is comprised of 7,580 ha and designed to be provided within the development of larger Hanoi Metropolitan Region.
The first framework of the masterplan was made by Deawoo/Bechtel. Based on the plan, OMA has developed the entire masterplan of the new city in 1997. Later design and masterplan of Hanoi New Town were developed by SOM starting from 2008.
