New Ameriya is part of the large-scale national plan that from the mid 1970s planned the construction of 14 new urban centers, satellites or new towns, around the regions of Greater Cairo and Alexandria, to face the rapid population growth. Subsequently the city was renamed “Bourg el Arab el Gedida”, known also as New Bourg. Other cities that are part of the same national plan are 10th Ramadan, 6th October, Al Badr, Sadat City.
